Cops on the Run
On Friday, June 6, 2008 several dozen officers from the Sayreville Police Department will be participating in the 25th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for NJ Special Olympics. Since 1984 Sayreville Police Officers have been raising thousands of dollars for N.J.'s athletes. Because of the ongoing generosity of the citizens and businesses of Sayreville, NJ police officers have been consistantly one of the top fundraisers for Special Olympics in the entire world.
There are currently 19 legs of the Torch Run relay with the final torch making its way to the College of N.J. where it ignites the Olympic Flame for the summer games. The leg that passes through Sayreville starts at the entrance of Island Beach State Park at 4:45am and ends in Perth Amboy at 2:30pm.
Sayreville Police Officers will run north from the Morgan Bridge on Route 35 after receiving the torch from Old Bridge police officers. They will then travel up South Pine Avenue through South Amboy, onto Old Route 4 and then north on Route 35. After climbing for the final mile of their 5.1 mile trek up the Victory Bridge they will pass the torch onto the Perth Amboy Police Department.
