Mayor O'Brien's Biography
Kennedy J. O’Brien has been an unrelentingly active volunteer in Sayreville’s community for years, constantly learning from his numerous experiences serving in Sayreville. Mayor O’Brien has served as the Former Commissioner and Former Chairman of the Sayreville Housing Authority. Mayor O’Brien also served on the Recreation Advisory Committee and he was a member of the original committee for the Sayreville Parade of Lights. In past years he has volunteered for the Sayreville Super Sports Saturday, and served on the Sayreville Recycling Committee as well as the Sayreville Zoning Board of Adjustment.
Mayor O’Brien was an active member of the Sayreville Citizens Against Dredge Dumping, and he has remained active in Sayreville’s rich community life. Mayor O’Brien is a Past Webelo leader, Pack 97 Cub Scouts. He is a parishioner of Our Lady of Victories Church as well as a 4th degree Knight in Our Lady of Victories Knights of Columbus Council 2061. Mayor O’Brien is a proud member of the Holy Name Society of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Mayor O’Brien also served on the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission.
In 1995, Kennedy O’Brien was appointed to an unexpired term on the Borough Council, and in 1996 he was elected to serve a full term on the Borough Council. Three years later, Kennedy O’Brien was elected Mayor of the Borough of Sayreville to begin his term January 1, 2000. Mayor O’Brien has since joined the Board of Governors for Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy and he was appointed to the New Jersey Redevelopment Authority in 2000. Mayor O’Brien is currently serving his fifth term as Mayor and has remained a successful businessman for 23 years.
Mayor O’Brien also serves full-time as a loving husband to his wife Janice, and father/stepfather to six children.
