SAFE RIDE

The Borough of Sayreville and the Sayreville Police Department in particular, have a long history of working with the public to establish safety programs and school safety curriculums. One of these programs is the SAFE RIDE program where we teach juveniles the rules of the road and ways to stay safe on their wheeled vehicles. This curriculum is taught K through grade 5. Middle and High School grades receive instruction in the importance of seatbelt use and the dangers of substance abuse and drunk driving.

The SPD Traffic bureau and Community service unit plan on expanding the program in the Middle and High School, by instituting a rewards-based follow up to the classroom instruction. It is our intention to periodically place officers at the entrances prior to the start of schools, with the objective of identifying students who are wearing seatbelts, or otherwise observed practicing safe driving principles. Those students would receive a reward that may consist of a gift certificate, prize, or other benefit.

We feel that this extension of the program would be a great way to follow up on the training the students received as they grew up, and may positively influence the safety habits of students who will be driving the roads of NJ for years to come.
