Bicycle Unit on Patrol

Sayreville Police Bike Patrol Unit

With the assistance of generous businesses and money received from government grants, the Sayreville Police Department established a bicycle unit in the Spring of 2002.  Volunteer officers were sent to a grueling five day course where they sharpened their biking skills and learned some new techniques.

Since then, the Bike Unit has been very proactive in enforcement and community relations.  Because of the mobility of bicycles, the officers are able to patrol areas where the average officer is restricted from patrolling.  The Borough's parks, wooded areas and crowded events are now safer because of the bicycle unit.

The bike officers ride Raleigh mountain bikes.  The bicycles are black with white lettering.  They are supplied with enough equipment to meet the many needs the officers may encounter.  From basic first aid, parking tickets, drug arrests and traffic enforcement, these bikes are well equipped.

The Bike Unit members are dedicated to bicycle safety.  Officers can often be seen handing out stickers to children who are caught riding their bikes with helmets.  They can also be seen doing roadside repairs for children having mechanical problems.

This year several members of the bike unit visited the elementary schools to speak about helmet safety.  This original program introduced Gilbert Aloysius Snickleberry to the students.  Young Mr. Snickleberry helped to demonstrate the right and wrong way to wear your helmet while keeping the children laughing.  Next spring the second of the three part bicycle safety program will visit the schools to continue the Bike Units support of safe riding.

Another great success is the Sayreville PBA/Sayreville Police Department Bike Rally.  Held on the first Saturday of June, the bike rally is a fun day for all while promoting safety on bicycles.  The rally includes a bicycle/helmet inspection, an obstacle course, mile time trial and a One Mile SAFE Ride down Main St.  Refreshments, repairs, t-shirts and laminated bicycle licenses are provided for free.
