Traffic Bureau
Traffic Safety Unit
As the borough gets more and more congested, the Traffic Safety Unit has become more active. The Traffic Safety Unit is within Uniform Services Division. It is charged with motor vehicle accident report management, performing follow-up investigations of serious injury, fatal or hit-and-run motor vehicle crashes and traffic surveys.
This specialized unit conducts traffic analyses, review site plans, subdivisions, and variance requests. They assist other government planning officials with the design and expansion of future building and development.
Traffic Safety is also in charge of the civilian crossing guards. More then a dozen civilian crossing guards are hired, trained and scheduled through Traffic Safety.
Training officers in the use of special equipment is conducted and scheduled through the Traffic Safety Unit. The unit assists with the training of new officers in traffic enforcement and accident investigation. They also instruct experienced officers in Defensive Driving techniques, radar enforcement and DUI enforcement. They maintain the Alcotest and Breathalyzer machines that are used for DUI enforcement.
Traffic Officers are certified in accident investigation, reconstruction, traffic enforcement techniques, road closure design, and child safety restraint installation. As you can see it is not just about writing tickets anymore.
