Release Date: September 14, 2022

EPA PUBLIC NOTICE Serfund Site U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Reviews Cleanups at Horseshoe Road and Atlantic Resources Superfund Sites The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting its Second Five-Year Review of the Horseshoe Road and Atlantic Resources Superfund Sites located in the borough of Sayreville, New Jersey. This review seeks to confirm that the two cleanup actions chosen for the sites are working as intended and that they continue to be protective of public health and the environment and are functioning as designed. The first cleanup action included excavation and offsite disposal of contaminated soil, backfilling of excavated areas, and use restrictions on contaminated properties, which was completed for both sites in 2014. The second cleanup action included dredging and offsite disposal of contaminated sediment from the adjacent marsh and the Raritan River, backfilling of dredged areas, and restoration of the marsh wetlands, which was completed for both sites in 2021. A summary of these activities and an evaluation of the long-term protectiveness of the remedy will be included in the upcoming report which will be available in the Fall of 2022.
